A Complete Glossary of Types of Coffee

Never sure what to order in a coffee shop or still wondering: “what is a cold brew coffee?” We’ve got you covered. Check out our glossary of types of coffee, from lattes to lungos.

 

Affogato: (Italian) one scoop of vanilla ice cream, one shot of espresso

Americano: (Italian / Latin American) one shot of espresso mixed with hot water

Bicerin: (Italian) one-part espresso, one-part hot chocolate and one-part frothed milk

Caffé Breva: (American) cappuccino made with half-and-half milk instead of whole milk.

Café au Lait / Café con Leche: (French / Spanish) one-part coffee, one-part steamed milk

Cappuccino: (Italian) two-parts espresso, one-part steamed milk foam

Cold Brew: (Japanese) coffee beans steeped in water and prepared without heat

Corretto: (Italian) one shot of espresso, one shot of liquor (usually grappa)

Doppio: (Italian) double-shot of espresso

Drip: (German) Hot water poured over roasted, ground coffee in a filter

Espresso / Short Black: (Italian) almost-boiling water forced through finely-ground coffee beans

Espresso con Panna: (Italian) one shot of espresso topped with whipped cream

Espresso Romano: (Italian) one shot of espresso, one teaspoon of sugar, lemon rind

Flat White: (Australian) double espresso, micro-foamed milk

Frappé: (Greek) instant coffee, water and sugar, blended and served cold

Galao: (Portuguese) one-part espresso, three-parts foamed milk.

Irish: (Irish) four-parts coffee, two-parts Irish whiskey, one-and-a-half parts fresh cream and a teaspoon of sugar

Latte: (Italian) double espresso, steamed milk, foamed milk

Long Black: (Australian) espresso poured over hot water

Lungo / Caffé Allonge: (Italian) long espresso with all the water brewed

Mocha: (American) one-part espresso, one-part cocoa powder, two-parts steamed milk

Macchiato: (Italian) one-part espresso, one-part steamed milk

Raf: (Russian) one shot of espresso, cream, sugar, vanilla

Red Eye: (American) espresso mixed with drip coffee

Ristretto / Café Serré: (Italian) short espresso with half the water extracted

Vienna: (Austrian) two shots of espresso, whipped cream
